  • Report after season 2007
The season 2007  was packed with misfortune for the team. It started with a long lasting back injury on one team member and continued with damage on both equipment and sails. We finished seventh in the national ranking series, two positions down from last year, which was predictable under the circumstances.

Our biggest problem this year was still height and speed,  maneuvers, starts and tactics were improved. We found a possible reason for the speed and height problems on the mast, but didn´t get a chance to test it before the last regatta. Unfortunately the last regatta was sailed with a crew assembled only hours before the first start, with one crew member new to the team and Martin (normally our tactician) at the helm. Again some equipment damage combined with the mixed crew positions was in the way of finding out how the mast repair effected the performance.

A summary over the problems this year: back injury on one team member, shrudder problems, main sheet fittings, gennaker lift, bow sprit, sail damage, mast damage... almost all the DNF´s, DNS´s and DNC´s had something to do with these problems. We did participate in over 40 race starts, which was acceptable, but certainly we would have liked to finish more often than we did.

The season next year will look a bit different. The teams helmsman will leave the project for other responsibilities. We wish him all the best in the future. Next step is to find a crew member / co owner that can fill the void left by him leaving the team. A new team member, possibly less familiar with the Melges 24, means taking one step back, but also provides a fresh start and new possibilities.

Anyone interested in co ownership at the position of helmsman or tactician / jib trimmer please contact Martin Finell (martin_finell@writeme.com)
  • 020707: Team feelings a bit disappointed, after the Finnish Championships in Helsinki. Heavy weather on Friday, more moderate on Saturday with choppy sea, to quite flat sea on Sunday. The team sailed without crew member 3 who was replaced with Jeppe F for the whole regatta. Fifteen Melges24 teams were registered to race but only thirteen showed up on the course. Nice racing anyway, aggressive starts during the whole weekend and lovely surfs with speeds up to 20 knots on Friday. Two masts were damaged during Friday. Luckily Midnight Sun TWO and Team Uusikaupunki managed to borrow replacements from other teams not participating. We still have a lot to do with our downwind speed and rounding techniques before the Nordic Championships in the end of July in Sweden. Results from the regatta on http://www.melges24.fi.
  • 290507: The second ranking regatta is now sailed. Suunto cup showed again the same tricky conditions as last year. Saturday was foggy with unstable winds, and everybody was surprised that the races was started at all. Anyway, we showed some good speed in the beginning of the races but had some bad luck with forced maneuvers towards calm areas. Wind shifts up to 90 degrees and wind speeds between 0 and 8 knots makes it difficult. Sunday started as foggy as Saturday but the sky cleared up very fast. Nice conditions and once again we showed two good starts and speed on the first upwind leg. Unfortunately the 12th position of 15 boats wasn´t quite what we were looking for. Congratulations to Peter on Zuxu for the win and also to Team Uusikaupunki that took a nice third place. Estonian Championships in Pärnu is the next event, stay tuned.
  • 060507: More wind during the second day on Tallinn bay. The Estonians again showed their strength in the tricky conditions with shifty winds up to 16 knots. We managed to keep our position from yesterday and left Elsa (FIN-328) behind us. The last race was disastrous when the wind did some nasty tricks to us on the first down wind mark. The series today... 5,5,6... and total score, 5th.
  • 050507: The first ranking regatta started off in excellent conditions in Tallinn. Moderate to light winds with a lot of shifts. The team was pleased with only one of today's four races today. We managed to stay in front of Mr. T half the race, but had to give up the pole in the end. The Estonians are pretty hard to beat here on their back yard and therefore the series today became 5,6,2,6. Second to last at this point, we think... 3 races scheduled tomorrow.
  • 040507: The first ranking regatta is tomorrow on the bay of Tallinn. The team had a successful training session last weekend with 3 other boats and two hard working organizers. All the boats where out for the first time this season. The day was set up into 5 different practices, starting procedures, tacking/jibing and last but not least penalty turns. The guys on the trims where exhausted. Stay tuned for first ranking regatta feelings during the weekend.
  • 230407: The spring started early this year and the team is preparing the boat for the season. The season starts with the first ranking races in Tallinn in a couple of weeks followed by Suunto Cup two weeks later. The Sport Boat Class Association (SUV) is planning a sport boat regatta in Dalsbruk the week before Suunto, and the team has thoughts to participate also in that event. The Finnish Melges Class association will organize a training session in Esbo incoming Saturday. The team hope that as many Melges teams as possible can participate, in order to get the most out of it.
